  • What Do You Remember?

    Today being September 11, many of us REMEMBER back those few years to the attacks in our country by the terrorist suicide-murderers where thousands of people died within a few hours.  Most of us REMEMBER not only the videos of the World Trade Center towers being hit by commercial planes, but we also REMEMBER where we were and what we were doing and with whom.  I was at work, trimming a new house.  We had a TV set on the job that day - very unusual that we would.  I stared in unbelief.  It was all over in a short time.  The towers collapsed and that was the end of many lives.  I REMEMBER, do you?

    Recently, I have been lamenting the short memory of people living today, both in their forgetting of the history of our country and the forgetting of their faith.  History is being rewritten today for the purpose of making us forget our heritage and the men and women who sacrificed their lives for the cause of freedom - the freedom that we take for granted now.  REMEMBER the struggles of the pilgrims as they suffered from cold and starvation and disease trying to adapt to the harsh environment of the new world so that they could worship God without the dictates of a government which was hostile to any believer who dared object to the "state religion."  REMEMBER the brave men who fashioned the Constitution of the United States and dared put their names on it.

    According to the "historians" of today, these people were not heroes at all but exploiters and pillagers and the Puritans were religious fanatics who did terrible things in the name of God.  -  And, since we have a faulty memory, we aren't sure but what these charges might be true after all.  I'm not suggesting that our forefathers were superhuman or that they were not sinners just as we are.  But by villifying them, we are denying that the cause of freedom was just and right and that many of our founding fathers believed that God was the only Sovereign Lord.

    Because of our "short memory" we are forgetting who we are and where we stand with God also.  So-called theologians and scholars are calling into question all that we ever knew about God and the Scriptures.  Many denominations are veering off course because they also have forgotten their heritage.  The Bible is being relegated to the level of an untrustworthy collection of biases and half-truths so that the "higher critics" can pass judgment on the teachings of the scriptures.  Modern society, popular opinion, and the latest fads carry much more weight in the decision making of many modern churches.  They don't REMEMBER their foundations and the true Head of the Church, Jesus Christ.

    REMEMBERing is important to God.  I can't tell you how many times God calls us to REMEMBER, but here are a few:

    "...“REMEMBER this day in which you came out from Egypt, out of the house of slavery, for by a strong hand the Lord brought you out from this place. "  Exodus 13:3

    " You shall REMEMBER that you were a slave  in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm'"  Deuteronomy 5:15

    "They REMEMBERed that God was their rock,
    the Most High God their redeemer.  Psalm 78:35

    "REMEMBER that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.   Ephesians 2:12

    Why should we forget?  What is wrong with us that we don't REMEMBER?   We were brought out of slavery, out of the world (Egypt) out of the muck and mire of our sin.  We were redeemed by the Most High God who is our ROCK.  Christ shed His blood to redeem us (without the shedding of blood there is NO remission of sin).  How could we fail to REMEMBER something so important as that?   Do you REMEMBER when you first saw your helplessness to save yourself and then saw Christ as your only hope of salvation?  Do you?  How is it then, that after a time we begin to lose our love for our Savior?  How do we begin to value the opinions of lost men and women over the True and Living Word?  How is it that we begin to nitpick the church and badmouth our brothers and sisters in the Lord?  How is it possible that we who once knew that we are without hope in this world apart from Christ now contend that our wisdom is superior to the wisdom of God?  Don't we REMEMBER that we are dust - that our life is just a vapor, here today and gone tomorrow?

    I hear God calling us all to repent of our foolish pride and our "selective" memory.  If we will REMEMBER where we came from, we will (at first) be like the children of Israel:

    "By the waters of Babylon,
    there we sat down and wept,
    when we REMEMBERed Zion."

    ...or like Peter:

    "And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter  REMEMBERed how Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept."   Mark 14:72

    REMEMBER  the day you first trusted Christ as your savior and return to that place of fellowship you once had by renouncing your sinful ways and acknowledging your need for His grace.  God is calling all men everywhere to repent.  The revival of God's  people is coming - as sure as Christ's return is coming.

    Bless you, brother. My heart is leaping for joy! God is raising up men and women who do REMEMBER.

    For Jesus' sake we can confess our sins and pray to our Father:

    Psalm 79
    8 Do not REMEMBER against us our former iniquities;
    let your compassion come speedily to meet us,
    for we are brought very low.
    9 Help us, O God of our salvation,
    for the glory of your name;
    deliver us, and atone for our sins,
    for your name's sake!
    10 Why should the nations say,
    Where is their God?

    and implore Him day & night...

    Psalm 79
    1 O God, why do you cast us off forever?
    Why does your anger smoke against the sheep of your pasture?
    2 REMEMBER your congregation, which you have purchased of old,
    which you have redeemed to be the tribe of your heritage!
    REMEMBER Mount Zion, where you have dwelt.
    3 Direct your steps to the perpetual ruins;
    the enemy has destroyed everything in the sanctuary!

    and then declare with assurance:

    12 Yet God my King is from of old,
    working salvation in the midst of the earth.

    God our King is from of old. God our King is working. God our King is working salvation - though there are times it may seem He is not. Yet we can trust by faith that God our King is working even now to restore glory to His Church. He is the King of His Church. He will restore His Church once again!

    Lord, have mercy on us, we have sinned against You. Revive and renew us for the glory and honor of Your Holy Name! Amen.

    We moved 20 times in 40 years and always attended church. We only found one church that taught doctrine that we did not agree with and we attended anyway. One year later they changed the doctrine and only lost 4% of their imagination. I hear a great deal about how churches are failing. I just don't find that in my personal experience. What I see is the vision and passion for Jesus is gone. I hear more about sound doctrine than loving other Believers like Christ taught in John 13:34--35.  I have heard about how bad churches are since I became a Christian in 1965.

    I guess some churches that welcome gays could be seen as a problem.  My wife and I know gays who became Christians and it is a very tough life style to turn from and many slip ups.

    Anyway, it is very good you are helping people remember our foundations. I think the media is painting a false picture of our start as a nation. It really was founded on the Bible. Jamestown was a mixture of church and money. Plymouth Rock was far more spiritual.  our nation does not represent those old values anymore that is for sure.

    sorry for rambling. I think I got off topic. sorry.

    @ANVRSADDAY@xanga - Frank, Thanks for stopping by and most of all for your comment.  Even if the people who are badmouthing the church are Christians themselves, I think it is clear where the slander and lies came from to start with.  It's good  to hear from someone who has a good word.  I agree, of course, with your understanding of the birth of our country.

    @naphtali_deer@xanga - Karen, my tears are tears of joy!  Thank you for the Psalm...God truly is working.  Praise His Holy Name!

    @quest4god - Amen, my brother and friend.

    Psalm 126

    1 When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion,
    we were like those who dream.
    2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
    and our tongue with shouts of joy;
    then they said among the nations,
    The LORD has done great things for them.
    3 The LORD has done great things for us;
    we are glad.
    4 Restore our fortunes, O LORD,
    like streams in the Negeb!
    5 Those who sow in tears
    shall reap with shouts of joy!
    6 He who goes out weeping,
    bearing the seed for sowing,
    shall come home with shouts of joy,
    bringing his sheaves with him.

    Our labor in Him is not in vain. We've been privileged to have a little taste some of the firstfruits. He has already done great things. Can we not trust Him to do greater things for the sake of His Name?

    @Vignettery@xanga - Thank you.  This subject (revival) is really on my heart.  I remember the early years of my walk with Christ.  I want this ardor again and to see it in others.  The zeal of the Lord consumes me.

    @naphtali_deer@xanga - I heard a brief reference to Negeb in a message the other day.  It is a desert now, right?  Streams in the desert would be comparable to revival in this day of spiritual dryness.  Let's do trust Him to do greater things for the sake of His Name!

  • naphtali_deer@xanga

    @quest4god - Yes, it is currently a desert, much like much of the Church today...but God...

    @quest4god - P.S.- Correction: the second excerpt in my original comment is from Psalm 74.
