This isn't a post meant to solve the problems of society or to promote any solution whatever. It comes from random bits of news and my own musings on them.
This is my question: What are They (Economists, Sociologists, Politicians) talking about when they talk of Trillions of dollars? (Supposedly the solution to any and all problems...just throw money at them.)
How much is a trillion anything(s)? I did not have a calculator handy that would register numbers that big, so some of this might be (a little) off, but the enormity of a trillion makes it kind of bogus itself.
My dad is nearly 93 years old and still ticking. By my calculations he is approaching 33,045 days, or more than 55 million minutes of age. If he had been able from birth to acquire $1000 for each of those minutes, he would have 55 billion dollars...wait, that's not enough! He would need to have received $1000 for each second of each minute. Then he would have at 93 years of age, 3 trillion dollars.
Or this: The earth is 93 million miles from the sun (give or take). So the path of the earth around the sun would be something like 58 billion miles. OK, so it would take the earth 17 years or so to travel one trillion miles in its orbit.
One more: Light, traveling at the rate of 186,000 miles per second would take 44 days to make a trillion miles.
So, when you hear people talking about trillions of dollars, just know that they are speaking of things about which they know so little.

I agree!
Well, we know it will not go on forever. Sooner, ... not later, we will crash our whole economic system according to the master biblical plan and be lumped into all the other countries going bankrupt and slide into the one world system. I always thought we would be gone by then, but it is increasingly looking like we (USA) are going crash and I'm still here...
So if our lovely government spends $186,000 per second, they will spend a trillion dollars in 44 days? Sounds about right.
I'm just as confused as I was before I read your post. lol
@JstNotherDay@xanga - Anyone who thinks that these are manageable numbers is even more confused than you and I!
@CitizenDon@xanga - Unfortunately that prospect doesn't faze them one little bit. We (the taxpayers) will cough it up....right? Maybe someone will come along and check my math. I tried to get close on it.
@Biblerapture@xanga - How is it that we ordinary citizens ( not the elite intelligentsia) can see that it can't go on forever? We are not supposedly that smart! I'm not sure about the application to Bible prophecy - when, who, how much, etc. I am eagerly awaiting the New Earth with the sovereign Lord in charge, though!
@CitizenDon@xanga - hahahaha my thought exactly! They get pretty close to it, too.
The debt is actually something we could climb out of in an ideal situation (meaning total unity and singleness of mind bent on stabilizing and building our economy and getting ourselves out of debt). But the fact is we see no signs of slowing our spending or no real significant efforts at creating financial responsibility in the nation.
So long as our politicians are busy playing politics there wont be much progress.
@TravelingStranger@xanga - Hi. Appreciate your comment! The main factor that always keeps us from reaching that hoped for ideal situation is the sinfulness of man - all of us. We are much more into seeing others sacrifice for the 'common good' than for any further sacrifice from ourselves. We are already doing all the 'right' things, aren't we? This is why social reform coming from man is doomed to fail...we are always looking at the other guy making sure that he doesn't get more than we do and that he pays his fair share.
In our fallen state, we are unable to govern our appetites and care for others as much as ourselves (which really would be in our own best interest too). No man has ever been found, except for the Son of Man, who is incorruptible and able always to deal equitably with all under his rule. And so we wait for the reign of our King of Kings!
