When This Passing World Is Done
When this passing world is done,
When has sunk yon glaring sun,
When we stand with Christ in glory,
Looking o'er life's finished story,
Then, Lord, shall I fully know,
Not till then, how much I owe.
When I hear the wicked call
On the rocks and hills to fall,
When I see them start to shrink
On the fiery deluge brink,
Then, Lord, shall I fully know,
Not till then, how much I owe.
When I stand before the throne,
Dressed in beauty not my own,
When I see Thee as Thou art,
Love Thee with unsinning heart,
Then, Lord, shall I fully know,
Not till then, how much I owe.
When the praise of heav'n I hear,
Loud as thunders to the ear,
Loud as many waters' noise,
Sweet as harp's melodious voice,
Then, Lord, shall I fully know,
Not till then, how much I owe.
Chosen not for good in me,
Wakened up from wrath to flee,
Hidden in the Savior's side,
By the Spirit sanctified,
Teach me, Lord, on earth to show,
By my love, how much I owe.
Robert Murray M'Cheyne 1837

Chosen not for the good in me! ~ Amen to sovereign grace!
I had to find my M'Cheyne – buried under a couple other books! I'd not picked it up in almost a couple months. Too many books!!!
As I was reading the last verse you listed here:
Teach me, Lord, on earth to show,By my love, how much I owe.
I actually first read it as:
Teach me, Lord, on earth to show,
By THY love, how much I owe.
I guess I did that because I've been thinking about the Lord's loving discipline of us... "Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him..." If you've known that look, that love, you are melted down and then begin to show here in earth how much we owe, that divine love constraining us to obedience.
BTW: I don't know if you know it, but there are a few other verses to the hymn. You can check those out here. I especially like this one, the sixth verse:
Oft I walk beneath the cloud,
Dark, as midnight's gloomy shroud;
But, when fear is at the height,
Jesus comes, and all is light;
Blessed Jesus! bid me show
Doubting saints how much I owe.
Jesus comes, and all is light! ~ Psalm 46:5b God SHALL help her, just at the break of dawn.
@naphtali_deer@xanga - Thanks for the link to the M'Cheyne site. (adding to favorites) I didn't know there was one. I was thinking that you were the one who first introduced me to that hymn, but I couldn't seem to find it or remember the the title for sure. Of all places, I found it in "Systematic Theology" and it seemed so familiar. Actually I thought of it while researching for the post on election and/or predestination. (still a long way from being written, if I can even write it!) Sovereign grace! How I love my Lord!
@quest4god - You're welcome! I'm all about getting good resources out to people. I don't think I introduced you to that hymn, but I may be wrong. M'Cheyne was a Calvinist and so is Grudem, so that makes sense to me. :)
