  • That Irritating Word

    The irritating "f" word.

You know "the word."   It appears more and more often here on Xanga/Revelife.   That word, and others of the same "caliber," are included in titles as well as the body of posts.   It is showing up in great profusion - in the writings of young girls as well as the most extremely outspoken ranters.   (I don't mean that there should be a double standard: one for young girls and another for older guys.)   It just bothers me that they spoil their image and try to appear worldly-wise and "mature" when that stigma will remain with them all their lives.

I am only one person here, and as such am just speaking for myself primarily.   When I see that word, or others like it, I immediately try to skip over it to see if there be any reason to continue reading that post....usually, it doesn't get much better.    In the past, I have messaged some authors who have sunk to that level in order to encourage them to think of other ways to "punctuate" their posts and convey the actual meaning they intend without resorting to vulgarisms.   A few, I've dropped as friends/subscribers so that I don't see those words every time I look through the writings of the day. Please, Xangans, don't cheapen your posts in such a way as that.

OK.  This is just me.  I'm not without sin and have my own set of shortcomings and things that others don't like.   I know that.   I just hope to see a lessening of this sort of thing on this forum, not an increase such as is occurring at present.   Thanks to you who have read through this rant.   (However, I will delete comments that display complete contempt for my views by using "those words" in their comments.)

Well, I can see you don't like the word, but I confess I don't know which word it is.

  • quest4god

@blonde_apocalypse@xanga - I added a reference to it in the first sentence....I had thought it would have been identifiable by the context of my post.  Sorry.

  • Pickwick12@xanga

I'm totally with you on this.

  • LoBornlytesThoughtPalace@xanga

I use the word "dunderhead" in lieu of the "F" word. It's like eating food with no salt but what the dunderhead!

  • quest4god

@Pickwick12@xanga - Thank you, Amy.   It may do little good, but with the trend being what it has become, I am thinking seriously of closing down my site....I am at cross purposes with those who want to show off their vulgar ignorance - so much so, that it feels like I am beating the air.

  • Pickwick12@xanga

@quest4god - I hear you. I find myself editing my friends list frequently just because I don't want to see certain things in my feed.

  • quest4god

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace@xanga -The "other word" serves as a noun and a verb with modification, also an adjective or adverb....very versatile and very repugnant, I might add.

Dunderhead is mostly a noun, and if my German serves me rightly, means "thunderhead" but is thought of I guess as "blockhead" or some such thing.   Anyway, it's much preferable to my way of  thinking than vulgarity.

    Thanks for a light-hearted reply.

  • quest4god

@Pickwick12@xanga - Amen!   And it's a shame because sometimes those people do have something worthwhile to say and do so without profane babbling.

  • Pickwick12@xanga
  • JstNotherDay@xanga

I agree with you.  I wish there was a way to get across to people who write in that fashion that they only lessen the impact of their arguments.  I quickly leave off reading posts that rely on that one word.

  • LetterByLesson@xanga

The most frustrating thing about blogs, movies, music, etc. with bad language in it is that you tell yourself "those words won't get in my head, I'll just ignore them." And then you start to notice they're popping up in your mind as you think.

Music and movies I can survive without, but sometimes I feel like I need to read through all the cussing on blogs because of the sensible words between the blogs.
  • quest4god

@LetterByLesson@xanga - I am hoping that more people will begin to reject this bad language.   It isn' t really helpful in making a point.   It does make it seem that the writer has a rather limited vocabulary - also discounts the wisdom and knowledge of the writer using those same few words so often.

  • quest4god

@JstNotherDay@xanga - Yes.   This, I hope will occur to these people.    If their object is to be heard/read, they are  defeating their own purpose.

  • Evangelist_Guy@xanga

I know what you mean, but when I see folks using vulgarity
I see folks who are crying out in frustration and who really need to experience the love of Jesus. Several visit my site frequently and I am hoping that they are finding that there is more to life than vulgarity! I usually befriend them because I think Jesus would...

I would really encourage you to hang in here and continue to be a light to a dark and perverse generation! God bless, ~ Pete

  • quest4god

@Evangelist_Guy@xanga - Thanks for your encouragement.  I do not want to abandon Xanga/Revelife because of the very reason you stated.   My feelings are that the trend toward profanity and vulgarity are increasing and eventually will make ineffective any witness for Christ because the mob mentality will ignore all we say.

I'm not leaving until God makes it plain that He is directing me to leave.

  • JstNotherDay@xanga

@quest4god - What you said to Guy@xanga... Same here.  I want to continue to be a witness for God unless and until it is clear that He does not want me here.  I am a warrior for Him and I feel that if we abandon this forum then we abandon Him.  There is a battleground here... Who would it serve best to win on this battleground...

  • poetically_truthful@xanga

Well I must admit that I've allowed it to slip out a few times. It's kind of funny with me though. For somebody who knows me well, they can totally get what mood I'm in if any curse words come out of my mouth. In the extreme, I might say the f word out of anger, but I won't really be angry. I'm just masking deep pain with outside anger. The only word I seem to use without realizing is the s word. I use it in those uh-oh moments, but only the ones that make you move/think fast.

Despite what I've written and what you may have read from me before, I actually don't like vulgar language either. At work when the "kids" (they're my age or a few years younger, but obviously immature) use it at work I tell them I'm gonna make them eat soap. :) When I hear somebody curse, it actually scares me a little bit. I consider it "violent" language.

    How are you?
  • quest4god

@poetically_truthful@xanga - Thank you for your honesty in commenting.  None of us is without faults or weaknesses.  It is well worth it though, allowing the  gift of the Holy Spirit to so order our speech and writing.   He (God's Holy Spirit) does not direct us to profanity or to display anger in a base manner.

It is well that you are aware of the necessity of being a good example to young people - especially those who don't yet know Jesus.   God will enable you to be that single-minded person who is more about the gospel and making disciples than about displaying yourself.

We need to pray for one another that we may represent our Lord in all things.

  • LetterByLesson@xanga

@quest4god - That's true. It doesn't make anyone look intelligent. And I guess if people who don't like it just pretend they can't see it, the language is only going to get worse.

What's the point of swearing anyway?
  • quest4god

@LetterByLesson@xanga - I've tried to figure out why anyone swears (uses profanity) - including that which I had done in my younger years.

For me, it was a conscious attempt to "fit in."  Stupid, I know, but at the time I thought it made me cool.   Come to find out, I was liked better before I added that  language.

I have a friend who swears when he loses his temper.   He claims it's the only language some people understand....go figure!

On this forum, vulgarity is used to gain readership or in some cases to get at someone with whom they have an argument.  It would be better, after writing something like that, to delete it even before submitting it.   A Christian should remember Who it is that he is representing.

Once a person has given themselves permission to do those things, they are on a down-hill path.  Until they repent and also ask forgiveness from those they've verbally abused,  they are caught in that trap of their own making.

  • LetterByLesson@xanga

@quest4god - You'd think that these Xangans with bad language would read someone else's blog who cusses and realize how absolutely ridiculous they sound. Unless they just enjoy reading when other people write like that.

  • quest4god

@LetterByLesson@xanga - That's just it.   The sensibilities become dulled and it just seems "normal" to one who habitually cusses.   Very few who use profanity are even considerate of others and it doesn't dawn on them how ugly it sounds.  For the Christian, that is a terrible shame because that same disrespect for others is carried over to disrespect of God and themselves

  • LetterByLesson@xanga

@quest4god - This is true. I wish we could just shake some sense into people :)

  • KateeLee1@xanga

I'm sooo with you on this one, too! I work in a Christian book store where I could get fired for using that kind of word. So on the rare occasion that a customer uses that kind of word, in the store- it is rather shocking to say the least.

Seriously, kids are not taught to keep there speech clean any more. How sad!

  • quest4god

@KateeLee1@xanga - Even sadder...kids are not given guidance by example at home or in entertainment the proper respect for others by guarding one's tongue.   Instead, they are encouraged to "make a statement:"    (What I want, what I wear, what I do,...you have to accept).  Politeness, appropriateness, respect - nothing to bother with.

This, in part, accounts for the lack of striving to become the best one can be (or for Christians, to do all things to glorify God first).....maybe that's yet another post :)
