  • Letter to My Son

    Son

    I have written this letter to you so that I could speak to you one more time.  All the things we should have said to each other we can no longer say.   I know you love me and I love you too.  Right now, I am present with the Lord since I am absent from my body.   Since I have written this before leaving, I am not sure how much I can see of your life now.  One thing you can be sure of and that is that nothing I have ever done – no matter how well or how poorly I have lived – has given me the right to be with the Lord .  It  has all been because of Him, His sacrifice for me paying the debt I owed.  When I first trusted Him as my Savior, I thought in my heart to live only for Him.  As the years went by, I found that I could not keep all my promises to Him.  I was not constant and true in my love for Him.  I felt ashamed and unworthy and weak in my faith.  It was at that time that He assured me of His love for me and became my Lord, my Rock, and my Strength.  Christ had forgiven me all my sin -   past,  present, and future and had given me eternal life.  The more I realized that, the more I knew that my righteousness was not based on the life I had lived but on the Life that He gave for me.

    You’re wondering why I am saying all this, aren’t you?  Well, I know that you don’t feel that you are worthy of His salvation either.  Take heart.  If you feel that way, it could be His voice calling you once again to return to Him.  He has never left you.  That was His promise at the time you first trusted Him.  It is still His promise to you.

    You have adopted a life style of live and let live.  You have shared with me that you want to enjoy the life you have.   That is a good way of giving thanks to God for that life.  But He wants you to share and enjoy the abundant life.  He is your life.  That’s why you sometimes feel that you have to explain to others why you don’t acknowledge Him or go to church or lead your family in faith.  You know full well the consequences that others face if they ignore His gift of salvation.  You can be an influence for God even after all this time.  Your friends and family all need Christ.  It is the most important principle of life – to obey the gospel and the great commandment to make disciples.  You have been gifted in so many ways.  I implore you, Son, put those gifts to use for God.

    I will see you here with me some day.  We will have some real good times together, you and I.  Maybe there will be a bowling alley...and I think a chess board or two.  Most of all our conversation will be about the Savior who walked all the way with us so that we could be with Him and with each other.  Until that day, I will wait eagerly to see you.

  • Life With The Shepherd of My Soul

    The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
    He makes me lie down in green pastures.
    He leads me beside still waters.
    He restores my soul.
    He leads me in paths of righteousness
    for his name's sake.

    Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
    I will fear no evil,
    for you are with me;
    your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

    You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies;
    you anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.
    Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
    all the days of my life,
    and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
    forever.

    "But Lord, I can't lie around forever.  There is so much to do!  I mean, these still waters are beautiful, but what about the River of Life?

     Yes, Lord, I know you must restore my soul...I was lost, but now I'm found.  Thank you, my dear Lord.

     OK. You want to do the leading? I wouldn't stray off the right path and disgrace you for anything, You know that.  Oh, I see, as long as You are leading that won't happen.  You could not lead me astray.  Well, I DO want to honor and glorify you, Lord.

    Yes, Lord, I do feel much safer because of your rod and staff.  You love me, so you keep on teaching me and bringing me in line before I get into trouble.  And your rod can keep the wolves at bay.  It doesn't matter whether I am in the valley or on the hillside.  You are there!
    You are not ashamed to call me Your child.  You purposely chose me and anointed me to take Your gospel to the whole world.  You are my food and drink, you sustain the Life You have given me.  It's been all of You!  And the more I walk with You, the more I realize that this is the abundant Life you promised!  It is too wonderful for words!

    I am Yours for all eternity.  You will NEVER leave me or forsake me.  I will always be with you in Your house!  How I love You, Lord Jesus

  • What Do You Remember?

    Today being September 11, many of us REMEMBER back those few years to the attacks in our country by the terrorist suicide-murderers where thousands of people died within a few hours.  Most of us REMEMBER not only the videos of the World Trade Center towers being hit by commercial planes, but we also REMEMBER where we were and what we were doing and with whom.  I was at work, trimming a new house.  We had a TV set on the job that day - very unusual that we would.  I stared in unbelief.  It was all over in a short time.  The towers collapsed and that was the end of many lives.  I REMEMBER, do you?

    Recently, I have been lamenting the short memory of people living today, both in their forgetting of the history of our country and the forgetting of their faith.  History is being rewritten today for the purpose of making us forget our heritage and the men and women who sacrificed their lives for the cause of freedom - the freedom that we take for granted now.  REMEMBER the struggles of the pilgrims as they suffered from cold and starvation and disease trying to adapt to the harsh environment of the new world so that they could worship God without the dictates of a government which was hostile to any believer who dared object to the "state religion."  REMEMBER the brave men who fashioned the Constitution of the United States and dared put their names on it.

    According to the "historians" of today, these people were not heroes at all but exploiters and pillagers and the Puritans were religious fanatics who did terrible things in the name of God.  -  And, since we have a faulty memory, we aren't sure but what these charges might be true after all.  I'm not suggesting that our forefathers were superhuman or that they were not sinners just as we are.  But by villifying them, we are denying that the cause of freedom was just and right and that many of our founding fathers believed that God was the only Sovereign Lord.

    Because of our "short memory" we are forgetting who we are and where we stand with God also.  So-called theologians and scholars are calling into question all that we ever knew about God and the Scriptures.  Many denominations are veering off course because they also have forgotten their heritage.  The Bible is being relegated to the level of an untrustworthy collection of biases and half-truths so that the "higher critics" can pass judgment on the teachings of the scriptures.  Modern society, popular opinion, and the latest fads carry much more weight in the decision making of many modern churches.  They don't REMEMBER their foundations and the true Head of the Church, Jesus Christ.

    REMEMBERing is important to God.  I can't tell you how many times God calls us to REMEMBER, but here are a few:

    "...“REMEMBER this day in which you came out from Egypt, out of the house of slavery, for by a strong hand the Lord brought you out from this place. "  Exodus 13:3

    " You shall REMEMBER that you were a slave  in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm'"  Deuteronomy 5:15

    "They REMEMBERed that God was their rock,
    the Most High God their redeemer.  Psalm 78:35

    "REMEMBER that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.   Ephesians 2:12

    Why should we forget?  What is wrong with us that we don't REMEMBER?   We were brought out of slavery, out of the world (Egypt) out of the muck and mire of our sin.  We were redeemed by the Most High God who is our ROCK.  Christ shed His blood to redeem us (without the shedding of blood there is NO remission of sin).  How could we fail to REMEMBER something so important as that?   Do you REMEMBER when you first saw your helplessness to save yourself and then saw Christ as your only hope of salvation?  Do you?  How is it then, that after a time we begin to lose our love for our Savior?  How do we begin to value the opinions of lost men and women over the True and Living Word?  How is it that we begin to nitpick the church and badmouth our brothers and sisters in the Lord?  How is it possible that we who once knew that we are without hope in this world apart from Christ now contend that our wisdom is superior to the wisdom of God?  Don't we REMEMBER that we are dust - that our life is just a vapor, here today and gone tomorrow?

    I hear God calling us all to repent of our foolish pride and our "selective" memory.  If we will REMEMBER where we came from, we will (at first) be like the children of Israel:

    "By the waters of Babylon,
    there we sat down and wept,
    when we REMEMBERed Zion."

    ...or like Peter:

    "And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter  REMEMBERed how Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept."   Mark 14:72

    REMEMBER  the day you first trusted Christ as your savior and return to that place of fellowship you once had by renouncing your sinful ways and acknowledging your need for His grace.  God is calling all men everywhere to repent.  The revival of God's  people is coming - as sure as Christ's return is coming.

    (All emphases in the scripture quotations are mine.)

  • The Problem of Pain

    Someone has hurt you.  There was no malice or aforethought.  It was an accident.  There was no evidence that the perpetrator was impaired - you know, drunk.  In fact, there was no sobriety test given.  The only charge against that person is a misdemeanor.

    But you have pain.  You feel you may never get over it.  It  consumes you night and day.  Your friends tell you that you should sue.  That seems like the right thing to do.  Someone has to pay, don't they?  You are contacted by a plethora of attorneys eager to be retained so they can collect some exorbitant damages (some for you, too).  "This person should be in prison," they tell you, but you can help him ease his conscience by paying money - oh, no, it won't undo the damage, but "justice" will be done.

    Obviously, these are not my thoughts.  What are yours?

About Me

  • I am a long-time Christian still wanting more of God - hence the name. My quest is to know Him more intimately and to enjoy knowing Him. In my walk with Christ, I have been alternately passionate, fearful, happy, and sometimes lonely. He has been with me through all of that and still loves me like no one else can. I am married, father of nine children ( a blended family ), semi-retired yet taking care of my wife who is unwell. It has only been 6 months since I have done any blogging or socializing on the internet, and I consider it a great privilege to be able to do so. I pray always for you that God would count you worthy of (His) calling and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with power.....that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you and you in Him (2 Thes. 1:11&12). Learn to see yourself accomplishing what God has put in your heart to do.
